List of current A-League teams
Melbourne Victory: Currently the most successful A-League team to date, Victory have finished on top of the A-League ladder on three occasions to go along with their three Championships, one FFA Cup and a Pre Season Challenge Cup. They are the only team to have won all four Australian domestic trophies.
Victory are by far the most supported team in the A-League with 25,000 members in 2017. They play the majority of their home games at Aami Park, with finals and Derby matches against Melbourne City sometimes being hosted at Etihad Stadium.
Melbourne City: One of the bigger A-League clubs in the competition, City have averaged over 10,000 members over the last four years. They originally entered the competition as Melbourne Heart until they were rebranded in 2014 by the City Football Group. The club plays its home matches at Aami Park and holds its biggest rivalry with crosstown opponents Melbourne Victory where they play off in the Melbourne Derby.
Sydney FC: With three Championships and two Premierships to go with their FFA Cup win, Sydney FC is one of the most successful A-League teams in the country. The club has a reputation for signing high profile players such as John Aloisi and Lucas Neill and hold one of the biggest supporter bases with over 13,000 members in 2017. Sydney FC play their home games at Allianz Stadium in Sydney and hold their biggest rivalry against the Western Sydney Wanderers where they play off in the Sydney Derby.
Western Sydney Wanderers: With a strong community focus the Wanderers have grown to be the second most supported club in the country. Formed in 2011, they won the Premiership in their inaugural A-League season finishing on top 9f the A-League ladder and have kept that strong form going since with Grand Final appearances in 2013 and 2014. Despite their short history they have seen lots of success including being the first Australian club to win the AFC Champions League.
The hold their biggest rivalry against Sydney FC and play their home matches at the Sydney Showground Stadium.
Adelaide United: Founded in 2003, Adelaide United is now the only South Australian team in the A-League competition. They have already seen some success having topped the A-League ladder during the regular season on two occasions to go with their Championship win in 2016. The club holds the current A-League league record for the most goals and biggest win in a match when they defeated North Queensland Fury 8-1 in 2011.
Also known as the Reds, Adelaide United host their home matches at Coopers Stadium.
Perth Glory: The Glory was founded in 1995 and was one of the initial teams to enter the A-League competition in its inaugural 2005-06 season. Despite being around since the competition launched A-League results haven't gone their way so far as they are currently the least successful A-League team in the competition and do not currently hold either a Premiership or Championship title.
Central Coast Mariners FC: The Mariners were founded in 2004 as one of the 8 original teams in the A-League competition. Based in Gosford they are the first professional sports club to compete from that region. The club has won two Premierships to go with their sole Championship title in 2013, but have finished rrunners-upon another three occasions. They play their home matches at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford.
Brisbane Roar: One of the oldest clubs currently competing in the A-League, Brisbane Roar was founded in 1957. They entered the inaugural A-League season known as Queensland Roar but were rebranded to Brisbane Roar in the 2008-09 season.
Brisbane Roar currently holds the A-League record of the longest unbeaten run with 36 straight matches without a loss, during which time they won two of their three Championship titles.
Newcastle Jets FC: The club was founded in 2000 when it joined the National Soccer League and was one of three NSL teams to join the A-League. They're one A-League Championship win came in 2008 when they defeated the Central Coast Mariners in the Grand Final. In 2015 the FFA revoked their license after then owner Nathan Tinkler put the club into voluntary administration. A new Newcastle club was created that season under the same name and colours.
Wellington Phoenix FC: The only non Australian club in the A-League, the Nix are based in Wellington, New Zealand. They joined the A-League in the 2007-08 season after being formed in that same year to replace the New Zealand Knights as the only NZ team in the A-League. Their A-League results have only been average so far with no silverware in the cabinet yet.
