Opening Footy Fixture for AFL Season 2018

The 2018 footy season fixture will kick off with the traditional Richmond vs Carlton match up on Thursday night but the most interesting match looks to be the following night as Essendon host the Adelaide Crows where will get to take a look at just how well this new Bombers side lines up, taking on one of the best 2018 footy teams in the league.

The Bombers were the big playmakers during the trade period, securing big names in Jake Stringer, Devon Smith and Adam Saad; so an improved performance should be expected.

The 2018 AFL fixture have been pretty kind to the Bombers as well. Only the one double up against a 2017 finalist (Richmond). Being so productive over the offseason, I would expect them to be very popular amongst punters footy tips early on in the season but a lot will come down to how their new players click in a new side and it could be worth keeping a close eye on their pre-season form. Definitely, one of the more interesting teams heading into next year.

    Crows will be favourites again

Coming off a very disappointing Grand Final performance last year, the Crows will be looking to bounce back hard and play some good footy in 2018. They were the form team of the H&A season winning the minor premiership and after bringing star Carlton midfielder Bryce Gibbs into the side during the trade period, they look like they will only improve next season.

A midfield of Sloane, Gibbs, Matt Crouch and Brad Crouch will be very hard for any opposition team to stop.

2018 AFL fixture look a bit harder for the Crows than they faced last year, with double ups against Richmond, GWS and Port Adelaide, but with 6 of their first 9 matches being played at Adelaide Oval they should set themselves up well early and will likely start favourites in every match they play next season.

Gary Ablett goes back to Geelong

Cats fans would have been delighted with the offseason as they lured superstar Gary Ablett back to Geelong to finish his AFL career. Despite turning 34 next year the champ showed he still had plenty of good footy to play as he averaged 33 disposals in his 14 matches. A line up of Ablett, Dangerfield and Selwood through the middle is enough to cause sleepless nights for every other team in the competition but the real benefit will likely come from allowing the Cats to play Dangerfield more inside 50 as that is where they struggled badly in 2017.

I'm not sure they will improve quite as much as some footy pundits are tipping on the back of Ablett returning. But coming off finishing 2nd at the end of the H&A season last year and making the Preliminary Final, any improvement could make them the team to beat.

Will the Tigers repeat the Bulldogs?

While it could be a humbling 2018 for the Tigers who are going to face a tough task, looking at the fixture list,  in their quest to go back to back this season. After a fairly soft draw in 2017 they will now be faced with one of the toughest footy fixture in 2018 with double up games against three finals teams from last year including the improved Crows and Cats. With the Magpies will be their only double up of a bottom 6 team meaning they will be afforded no luxuries this year and will have to play very well consistently to make the top 4.

We saw the Bulldogs fall away dramatically after their premiership success the year before so the Tigers will be doing their best to avoid a repeat of that type of performance.

Both NSW teams look to have been treated fairly harshly by the 2018 fixture too with Sydney having to play 5 of their first 6 matches against teams who played finals last year as well as double ups against two teams who finished top 4 last season. While the Giants will have to play both Sydney and Adelaide twice next season and face short 6 day breaks into matches against last year's grand finalists.
